What Defines Success As A Blogger?

What do you think defines success as a blogger? Is it unique visits, Alexa rank, Compete Rank, Technorati Rank, amount of comments, asked to guest blog for someones blog, or how much money you make? There are some many things people can consider to say whether they are a successful blogger or not. I myself find it difficult to pinpoint it to one particular thing. I believe its a combination of things you do as a blogger that makes you successful.

I think to be successful you should have a good Alexa rank, plenty of comments, a good reputation in the blogging community, and make decent income from your blog.  I don’t think these things need to be set to an exact number because I think that number can always change.  What I like to do is set a goal for myself and once I achieved it I set a new goal and try to accomplish that.  So right now my goal is to reach an Alexa rank of 400K and I am working my way there.  Once I get to that rank my new goal will be 100K.  So in my head I have already planned the path I want my blog to progress on and I won’t stop until it gets to where I want it to be.

One other key I mentioned early is how many comments you get on your blog.  I would love to have 50 comments per post because that shows commitment by my readers and that I have some authority.  If I can have people returning to my blog just to make even a simple comment on my posts I am happy.  When I get a comment I try to respond to all of them to make sure if that person comes back that they see I have acknowledged them and appreciate their comments.  So I try when I can to make posts that will get people to want to respond to them with a comment.  If they don’t comment that is fine but the more I get the more I believe I have made it to the “big time” as a blogger.

So what do you think it is that defines success as a blogger? Do you agree that it is comments or do you think it is something else?  If you could rank the different factors do you have a particular order you would place them in where some would be worth more compared to others?

If I was to rank the different factors of success this is how I would put them (the top being the most important definition of success):

  1. Amount of comments
  2. Unique Visits
  3. Income earned
  4. Asked to be a guest blogger / people linking to your blog
  5. Alexa Rank / Technorati Rank
  6. PageRank / Amount of pages indexed in Google

This is the my order as I see it right now.  This may change as time goes but for now these are the things I want to see happen with my blog to determine the level of success of my blog.  I would love to see more comments, an increase in traffic, and my income go up to start.  Once I see that happening I would love to see those other things happen as well.  The longer I work at them the closer I get to these goals.  Once I reach them I will make new ones.

Yup that is very true. If your goal is earning money then that is one of your greatest measures of success. That is one of my main goals but right now I want to focus more of traffic before I focus on the income.

i think that success as a blogger is in whether your words make a difference – improving some aspect of life, say, or creating understanding between people

@Joy James – Thank you for the comment.

That is another thing I should add to the list. Thanks for pointing that out. If you improve some aspect of life then you are successful as a blogger. I hope I am doing that by teaching people how to improve their blogs and make money online. I guess only time will tell.
