Top 8 Google Adsense Earners

Posted on 18 September 2008 by Michael

Are your curious to know who some of the biggest Google Adsense earners are? I know that I was interested to know who the best are so I could check out their websites and see how I could possibly earn as much money as these people do. I realized from most of these sites that sites with user generated content usually ranked pretty highly for Google Adsense earners. It seems that these “community” type sites do tend to get a lot of traffic and we all know that traffic = money. So without any more delay here are a list of the top 8 Google Adsense earners as collected from online resources.

1. Markus Frind – PlentyOfFish.com – $300,000 per month

If you haven’t heard of this guy yet you should check out the website plentyoffish.com.  He is the person who created this free online dating website from his appartment all by himself.  His website soon become one of the largest dating websites online.  I have actually tried out his website myself and can see how it can be interesting and attract a lot of visitors.  The graphics and layout of the website is nothing fancy at all but the functionality is all there and its fast to use.

There have been many of doubts that he wasn’t making that much money so he made those people silent by posting this on his blog.  According to his blog this represented two months worth of Adsense earnings.

2. Kevin Rose – Digg.com – $250,000 per month

Kevin Rose started Digg.com in December 2004.  It is a social marketing site that is mostly news, video, and pictures that are submitted by users for other users to read about and view.  Basically what happens is you can signup for an account and you can submit a “news story” and other people can view it and if they like it they can “Digg it” and this boosts the rating of the post.  If it gets enough Diggs it will appear on the Frontpage of the site and will get tons of traffic.  Digg has both Google Adsense ads and Federated Media ads.  It is estimated that he earns roughly $250k a month from Adsense alone.

3. Jeremy Schoemaker – $140,000 per month

ShoeMoney is considered to be one of the greatest Internet Marketers out there.  He is very good with search engines and knows how to setup his sites to get optimal traffic to them.  In one of his best months with Google Adsense ShoeMoney earned $132,994.97.  You can imagine it was probably pretty difficult for him to cash a check of that size!

Unlike most of the other Google advertisers ShoeMoney makes his money from hundreds of sites and thousands of domains.

4. Jason Calacanis – Weblogs, Inc. – $120,000 per month

Jason Calacanis is the creator of Weblogs.  Weblogs is a network of blogs and it was apparently making roughly $4,000 a day from Google Adsense!  He eventually sold the company to AOL for a reported $25 million.  He also announced his retirement from blogging earlier this year (July 2008).  He is now focusing on his email campaigns instead.

5. David Miles Jr. & Kato Leonard – FreeWebLayouts.net- $100,000 per month

According to a Washington Post article these 20 year old’s claim to be making $100,000 a month from their site FreeWebLayouts.net which offers free Myspace templates. That is pretty impressive for a couple of young guys that are offering free Myspace templates!

6. Tim Carter – AskTheBuilder.com – $30,000 per month

Tim Carter is a licensed master plumber and carpenter with his own radio show.  He started his website up in 1995 with his primary focus to cater to an avid following of fellow builders on the site.  In April 2004, Carter learned about Adsense for content sites and he put it on his site.  With minimal effort and time he optimized his website and his Adsense earnings grew from $1,500 to $7,500.

There was a Google case study done on Tim Carters earnings with Google Adsense.  You should definately read it by clicking HERE.  Read the results section because it gives a bunch of helpful tips on how he increased his revenue with Google Adsense.

7. Joel Comm – e-book – $24,000 per month

Joel Comm is a get rich quick guru.  He wrote an e-book, What Google Never Told You About Making Money with Adsense. With his e-book and his website he earned $23,458.46 between Nov 2005 and Dec 2005. Check out his Google account stats here.

8. Shawn Hogan – DigitalPoint.com – $10,000 per month

Shawn Hogan is the creator of the forum DigitalPoint.  This forum is a very usual forum with lots of information about: Search Engines, Marketing, Business, Design & Development, and Products & Tools.  In a New York Times article it stated that he was making roughly $10k a month with Google Adsense.

The members of his forum speculate he is now making around double of what he was making in 2005 when this report was published in the New York Times.

So there you have it, the Top 8 Google Adsense earners.  This list might be slighty out of date and there could be some new people in this list but this is the list I was able to pull from collecting information on the net.  So check out these sites and see if you can strive to earn as much as these people do with your website or blog.

@Abhishek – thanks for the comment.

A tip for you. If you plan on using Adsense on your blog you will need to get rid of Entrecard. Entrecard is against Google Adsense policy because its traffic sharing.

hmmmmmmmmmm.. great.. how can we earn alot like above

  14. Michael Says:

@Miss Kitty – thanks for the comment. Have you added links to my site in your blog posts you took from my website yet? That would be appreciated!

As for your comment. It will take a ton of work and effort to make a lot of money like the people above. You will need to get a ton of traffic and have a lot of people interested in your site before you can make this type of income. It usually takes some people 5 – 10 years to figure this type of thing out if you are committed. I am going to work at it myself until I am very successful like the people above.

  15. Miss Kitty Says:

Well, thanks, but how can we drive traffic? how can we become successful in online website business? Do you have any good idea?

  16. Michael Says:

@Miss Kitty – there are plenty of ways. Feel free to check out my other blog posts for information on how to generate traffic to your blog.

  18. Michael Says:

@Jielea – thanks for the comment. I am glad you like the information. It will definitely take a lot of work to make a lot of money but if you keep at it and give it all your effort you can do it!

  19. Stephen Says:

    Excellent article, very motivational. ;)

I’m still new to all this adsense & online marketing stuff, but i hope i’ll learn enough to be able to earn some decent money later.

Currently, i’m trying to find something to make website about. I’ve made a mindmap of my competencies and interests, and i’ve researched a bit about the relevant keyword prices. Most of these areas are pretty saturated (graphics tutorials, exercising, success, …).

One of my biggest interests are intelligence-related: speed reading, memorizing, calculating, and other brain training. There are not many sites/blogs about it, and i could easily establish myself as authority in that domain, but the click prices and search count are very low.

I see a lot of people recycling each others ideas, thousands of people opening free flash games blogs, etc.
Maybe i should try something like that… they don’t complain about not earning much.

What do you think about this?

    Thanks for your time.

  20. Michael Says:

@Stephen – thanks for the comment. I would recommend you go with something new like your interests in intelligence-related topics. If you do something that is too overdone you need to work a lot harder to get the traffic. I found that with my blog. I work very hard to get traffic to my blog but its slowly paying off. If you have very original content you should be fine though as long as you advertise and SEO your website.

  21. Stephen Says:

    Thanks for your reply, Michael.

I’m still researching the number and quality of potential income sources i could integrate with my intelligence-related site/blog. Keywords of my interest are rarely searched, majority doesn’t care about things i would be writing there, and those few that come to the site aren’t people who click on the ads. I’ll probably make the site and experiment a little bit with it.

Talking about the overdone concepts, there are thousands of dating sites around there. It’s interesting to see how Markus Frind managed to become #1. I’m still figuring out in what ways is his site better than the others, and how did he market it so fastly. He probably had very good USP.

  22. Michael Says:

    Your welcome for the reply.

I think that even if its just for fun you should try making the site and see how it does. It may be true that not a ton of people would be searching your keywords but then again it would be more rare content and therefore would be very unique and would rank highly. You can also make your site a bit more broad and cover more topics and then get more users that way.

I know the feeling about trying to attract visitors that know about the ads and will not click on them. I am writing to people that are very aware of my ads and do not click on them. That is why I have a difficult time making a lot of income at the moment. But that is ok because I will keep at it until I make this site work.

Markus Frind was one of the first to make a free online dating site. I think that is why his was soo successful. He programmed it to run fast but not look pretty. It works and is very useful and addictive to use. I know because I once used it myself. That kind of website doesn’t really need much advertising. Once a few people join and like it they tell their friends and so on and so forth. If you can come up with an idea like that you will be rich! So just think of the next big thing and work on it. Good luck.

  23. small business medical insurance Says:

saw your post on delicio.us and had to read the rest…great stuff!

  24. Stephen Says:

I didn’t know that Markus Frind was one of the first. That explains a lot of things.

I’ve decided to make that site and learn something in the process. It will benefit me in many ways: improve my writing skills (which are far from being good), offer me valuable experience with affiliate marketing, SEO, adsense, etc…

Regarding the big thing idea, that’s my biggest ambition. I have a lot of ideas for various web 2.0 projects, but i don’t have enough time & money to realize them.

I try to write every potentially profitable idea my mind generates. There has been some research regarding this. When you write your ideas down, you’re telling your brain to continue generating ideas like these. It’s like giving your brain a cookie to reward it and motivate it to continue generating ideas like these.

Sounds strange, but i’m more creative and i’m getting more great ideas after i started writing them down. My cellphone is full of notes describing ideas i get in some crazy hours at random locations.

Thanks for your help, and sorry for the long posts :) .

  25. Michael Says:

Yup Markus was one of the first people to do this kind of thing about 8 or so years ago so he was very successful at it.

Good idea to make a site and learn from it. I’ve done that with 4 or 5 sites now. I just build them and learn from the process. Whatever doesn’t work I throw away and whatever does work I keep to use on new projects.

As for writing down your ideas. That is something I do as well. Whenever I come up with what I think is a good idea I write it down and plan on working on the project. So I definitely think that is a good thing to do.

Your welcome for the help and no problem for the long post. Glad you are reading my posts and enjoying some of them!

  33. Millionaire Acts Says:

I definitely agree with Markus of Plentyoffish. His alexa rank now is comparable to a famous corporate website. He ranks 300+ only in alexa overcoming some famous corporate websites such as bloomberg!

  36. Stu Says:

This makes for some interesting reading… especially when you consider that I’ve made nearly a whole one dollar in the last month with Google Adsense. Might be time to up my game and try some better site promotion.

  37. Michael Says:

@Stu. Glad you enjoyed the post. Yup you definitely need to stick at it and work hard. I remember when I first started to make money with Adsense. It was a great feeling. It took me months to get there but now I am having the best month to date this month and looking forward to the future with my blog.

I would suggest experimenting a lot with Adsense and learn from it. Also concentrate a lot on content a link building. The more traffic you get the more likely it is you will make some money with Adsense.

    Good luck!

  38. beau Says:

Actually, the picture of the check from google, to me, looks doctored. I would not expect a check from google to look like that honestly. To me, the “google” text and the signature text look like they’ve been pasted on to the check after the fact. Just an observation.

  39. Michael Says:

@beau – I am pretty sure it isn’t doctored. The guy that runs the site is getting tons of unique hits per day. He is the number 1 rated dating site in Canada and many other countries around the world. His website is huge and tons of users. I am pretty sure his earnings are legit.

However you are entitled to your own opinion.

Thanks for commenting on the post!
