10 iPhone Apps For Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

Posted on 28 February 2010 by Michael

Everyone loves a new year. It’s a fresh start, full of promise that this will be the year you get fit, budget better, organize your life, and help others. Just like last year. And the year before that.

So how can you ensure that your resolutions last past January? Well, you won’t be surprised to find out, there’s an app for that. Here are 10 great iPhone apps to help you stay true to your New Year’s resolutions.

Note: Many of these apps are on sale for the New Year holiday.

Lose Weight and Get Fit

1. DailyBurn

This app does everything but burn the calories for you. Enter your current weight and goal weight, and it’ll tell you how many calories you should eat a day and show your progress. You can even input in what foods you eat, and the comprehensive database will tell you the calorie count. Keeping track of everything you eat may seem a little OCD, but studies have shown that food diaries help with weight loss. If you want to make this process easier you can buy their companion app, Food Scanner ($2.99), that allows you to scan UPC codes of store-bought food to keep track of calorie and nutrition info. Oh, and everything syncs to dailyburn.com. What are you waiting for?

Cost: Free

2. iFitness

iFitness is the best fitness app out there right now. It has over 230 different individual exercises to choose from. For each exercise you’ll see a picture, a description, and, for most, a video as well. You can even choose exercises based on muscle group. This app is great for everyone from the beginner who’s looking for an easy-to-follow workout, to the advanced body builder who wants a custom way to track progress.

Cost: $2.99

Save Money

3. Mint.com

Mint (Mint) somehow makes budgeting fun (or as close to fun as possible) with it’s slick interface and color coded graphs and charts. The iPhone app allows you to check in with your account on the go. You can see alerts (“You’ve spent too much on parking!”) and take a quick look at your budgetary goals, which may be just the thing to prevent that impulse buy, or remind you that $4 lattes add up really fast.

Cost: Free

4. BillMinder

If you’ve ever paid a bill late, this is the app for you. Enter all your upcoming bills and BillMinder will keep track of when they’re due and whether they’re auto-paid or not. If a due date is coming up, it’ll send you a push notification. They have a free version, Bill Minder Lite, you can try as well (it limits the number of bills you can input).

Cost: $1.99

Get Organized

5. 43Things.com

This app is made for sticking to life goals and New Year’s resolutions, so it was a no-brainer for this list. In it you can keep track of up to 43 “things” that you’d like to accomplish, write notes about each goal, and indicate what percentage of the way you are towards finishing it. It also syncs with their online community 43things.com, which has a cool feature that shows you the goals others are trying to accomplish — just the thing to inspire you to set goals of your own.

Cost: Free

6. Remember the Milk (Remember The Milk (RTM))

Remember the Milk has got a lot of things going for it. Aside from it’s catchy name and cute cow mascot, it’s a great simple to-do list and task manager. It’ll send you push notifications when your task is due and allows you to categorize tasks with multiple lists. You can also sync with the Remember the Milk web app, Google Calendar, and Google (Google) tasks. Adding tasks is easy, and you can even add them via e-mail as well as share them with others. However, you might spend so much time getting your tasks organized, you run out of time to actually get them done.

Cost: 15 day free trial and then $25/year subscription

Learn Something New

7. Human Japanese

Everyone always says they want to learn another language. Well, stop waiting and get an iPhone app to actually do it. Human Japanese is an amazing app that lets you learn the language from square one. If you’re interested in learning other languages, check out Basic Spanish for Dummies ($0.99), Pocket Italian – Beginner ($4.99), or FREE French Essentials by AccelaStudy (Free). The iPhone has apps to help you learn just about any language you’d want to.

Cost: $9.99

8. Star Walk

Maybe this is just one of my personal goals, but I’ve always wanted to know more constellations (other than the big dipper). This app feels like stargazing with my own personal astronomer. Hold the app up to the sky and it’ll show you what constellations you’re looking at. You can even use it in the daytime to see what the night sky would look like. And it has more info than I’ll ever find time to absorb.

Cost: $2.99

Go Green

9. Good Guide

Let’s say one of your goals is that you’d like to make a difference. You walk into the grocery store and try to figure out what to buy, but you can’t tell which products are the most “green.” Are any of them actually better for the environment? Are they worth the extra price? Use Good Guide’s comprehensive database to figure out which products are best for your health, the environment, and society. This app even has a barcode scanner so you can quickly check out products before you buy them. Also, each product has not only a rating but a breakdown of why they were given that rating so you can make your own judgments.

Cost: Free

10. A Real Tree

Much as the name implies, this app plants a real tree in one of twelve countries facing deforestation. Lest you get confused (like some of the app’s reviewers) the point is not the the app itself, which simply shows a growing tree animation. Instead it’s created to give iPhone users an easy way to donate, simply by buying the app. If you’d like to learn more check out Mokugift. Their site allows you to virtually gift a tree to a friend.

Cost: $0.99

Apple iPhone 3G S Jailbroken After Two Weeks

Posted on 06 July 2009 by Michael

It was only a matter of time until the latest version of Apple’s iPhone 3G S was jailbroken. This time, jailbreaking the Apple iPhone 3G S took only about two weeks and the feat was pulled off by a teenager hacker named George Hotz.

Hotz first revealed that he had created an app to jailbreak the iPhone 3G S last Friday for Windows users.

“Yes, this is what you’ve all been waiting for. A jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS. And it’s awesome. To get started right now, go to purplera1n.com. Download it,” Hotz wrote on his blog.

The teen hacker followed up his Windows version of the jailbreak on Saturday with an application that is compatible for Mac users.

According to Hotz, he normally wouldn’t make his iPhone 3G S jailbreak app available to the public, preferring to leave it up to other parities. But the Dev Team decided not to post a jailbreak for iPhone OS 3.0, instead waiting until version 3.1 of the software.

That decision did not sit well with Hotz, who apparently felt that someone needed to produce a jailbreak application of the smartphone sooner rather than later.

“Normally I don’t make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats [sic] up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn’t worth waiting because you might have the ‘last’ hole in the iPhone. What last hole…this isn’t golf. I’ll find a new one next week,” wrote Hotz.

Jailbreaking an iPhone allows the device to run third-party applications that are not supported by Apple and AT&T. An iPhone that has been jailbroken can also function on carriers other than AT&T. However, if something goes wrong with a jailbroken iPhone neither Apple nor AT&T will provide any assistance.

Hot Stuff: Apple iPhone 3G S Overheating

Posted on 29 June 2009 by Michael

Just when you thought the Apple iPhone 3G S couldn’t get any hotter, the popular smartphone has been plagued with overheating issues, and, in some cases, is getting so toasty that the device itself turns brown.

It appears the ill-fated Hottest Girls application isn’t the only thing making new iPhone users sweat.

Apple has yet to respond to the claims.

French site Le Journal du Geek featured a photo of what appears to be a scorched Apple iPhone 3G S, which the site says overheated and turned the white casing pink, or light brown from the heat.

Another French site, Nowhere Else also posted images of Apple iPhone 3G S devices discolored by overheating.

Domestic users are also feeling the heat. One of the forums on Apple’s Apple Discussion site indicates that a host of users’ iPhones are overheating. One user said a friend’s Apple iPhone 3G S “got extremely hot. He almost put it into the fridge.”

The early blame seems to fall on games and GPS, resource-intensive applications that are pumping up the battery until it gets too hot to handle and eventually overheats.

Even over on PC World, Melissa J. Perenson wrote that her Apple iPhone 3G S “became very hot. Very, very hot — not just on the back, but the entire length of the front face, too.” At the time, she was using a game and then the Web browser over a Wi-Fi connection with the device plugged in. “Toasty doesn’t even describe how surprisingly hot it got. It was too hot to even put the phone against my face.”

One commenter shared this tale: “I had my iPhone under my pillow playing music through the head phones for a nap; I awoke with a sharp pain on my left arm under the pillow. I had been burned decently from the iPhone getting so hot. The phone seems to function fine though.”

While another offered this advice to users of overheating iPhone 3G S smartphones: “Throw out your microwave — simply drop your iPhone on the plate instead.”

Apple Runs Short Of iPhones

Posted on 28 June 2009 by Michael

apple-ipodstockThe iPhone availability widget is back — new and improved — and it’s showing spot shortages of selected iPhones at Apple (AAPL) stores across the United States.

The availability tool, which appears on Apple’s website in times of scarcity, was last seen in the summer of 2008, when demand for the iPhone 3G was heavy and supplies short.

When it reappeared on Friday, only 29 of Apple’s 257 stores were displaying shortages of any iPhones, according to IFOAppleStore, a website that keeps close tabs of Apple’s retail business.

By Sunday morning, however, there were red “sold out” lights for selected 3GS models in all but six states.

Kentucky’s only store, in Louisville, was completely out of stock.

This year’s model of the widget is considerably more accurate than the original. Last year, availability numbers were updated at the end of each business day. This year, according to IFOAppleStore, the page is linked directly to Apple’s internal point-of-sale computers, allowing hourly updates for each store.

The shortages are all over the lot, but Apple seems to be having a particularly hard time meeting demand for the entry-level white iPhone 3GS. In Texas, the 16GB model is sold out in all but three of the state’s 15 Apple Stores. It’s not clear whether demand for that model is unusually high or if Apple just isn’t making enough of them.

To check availability in the Apple Store nearest you, click here.

AT&T (T) has had 3GS supply problems from Day 1, but the widget doesn’t cover their stores.

According to Apple, the older 8GB iPhone 3G is available in all its stores.

iPhone App Is Used As A Credit Card Terminal

Posted on 31 March 2009 by Michael

Website: www.processaway.net

As if phones didn’t already do enough, one of the latest mobile apps transforms iPhones and iPod Touches into portable charge card terminals. ProcessAway plugs into Authorize.net’s payment processing platform, allowing entrepreneurs to accept credit card payments anywhere they can access the internet.

After downloading the app and (separately) setting up a merchant account with Authorize.net, clients can use ProcessAway like a traditional charge card terminal: enter the amount, input the card number, expiry date and verification code, and process. There’s even a tip option for service businesses. Customers receive an email receipt for each transaction, and merchants can view transactions and process refunds on the fly. Aware that consumers might be weary of having their credit card details punched into a phone, ProcessAway stresses that’s a secure application: information is never stored in the phone and the program won’t connect to anything other than the terminal.

If it can gain trust and acceptance, ProcessAway could be particularly useful for those who need to process and authorise payments on-the-go, like on-site consultants or handymen. It’s also useful at venues that don’t have fixed terminals: antique shows, market stalls and music merchandise stands.

ProcessAway is available from Apple’s App Store for USD 19.99, and Authorize.net collects its usual transaction fees. ProcessAway isn’t the only one playing this field: Innerfence released its slightly more basic Credit Card Terminal app late last year. Although both programs are currently only available in the US, they could be a valuable tool for minipreneurs in other parts of the world.

iSteam For iPhone Earns A Bunch Of 22-Year Olds $100,000

Posted on 26 March 2009 by Michael

iSteam features an incredible graphics engine that renders foggy, wet overlays on top of any image from your iPhone’s library with astounding realism. But it isn’t just the graphics itself, it’s the clever use of iPhone’s user interface and sensors that earned this application such a huge following.

The iSteam application is for sale for just 99cent and has been bought over 1 million times since its launch last week! iSteam has currently experienced more than 14% daily growth, with estimated monthly revenues of $100,000 – all this just 8 days after iSteam was first released. Since the launch of iSteam other top iPhone applications such as iFart and iBeer have seen a drop in sales for the first time since they launched.

This was all done by a bunch of 22 year olds, it just shows that young entrepreneurs know where it is at! iSteam managed to show up some well established Apps backed by millionaires in under 2 weeks! I wonder what would happen if we give them a month.

Good job iSteam!

Nine-Year Old Whiz-Kid Writes iPhone Application

Posted on 26 March 2009 by Michael

While most children his age sketch on paper with crayons, nine-year old Lim Ding Wen from Singapore, has a very different canvas — his iPhone.

Lim, who is in fourth grade, writes applications for Apple’s popular iPhone. His latest, a painting program called Doodle Kids, has been downloaded over 4,000 times from Apple’s iTunes store in two weeks, the New Paper reported on Thursday.

The program lets iPhone users draw with their fingers by touching the iPhone’s touchscreen and then clear the screen by shaking the phone.

“I wrote the program for my younger sisters, who like to draw,” Lim said. His sisters are aged 3 and 5. Lim, who is fluent in six programing languages, started using the computer at the age of 2. He has since completed about 20 programing projects.

Lim isn’t the only young entrepreneur making money online with iPhone applications, there are many other young entrepreneurs earning $100,000s online selling their iPhone application online.
