Facial Profiler, A New Facebook App: Cool Or Creepy?

Posted on 27 December 2009 by Michael

Have you ever wondered if there is someone out there who looks just like you?  Probably everyone has entertained the thought at some point.   But the thought of it actually happening?  Well, if you’re really that curious, here’s your opportunity.

The Facial Profiler, a new facebook app, is actually an ad campaign launched by Coke Zero, its point being that the calorie-free version is so much like the real thing, they can prove it by showing that every single person on the planet has a doppelganger.  Here’s how it works: you upload a photo of yourself and you’re matched with a similar-looking Facial Profiler user.  The idea is that you can find your mirror image, just the way Coke has in Coke Zero.

I suppose it’s kind of a cool concept, if you can get past the high creepiness factor.  I don’t know if I want to know that there’s another person walking around out there with my face.  And what happens once I find that person?  Do we build an online bonding relationship and hope to meet in person one day so we can sit and stare at each other?

Coca-Cola is aware of the potential privacy concerns that a facial-matching app could raise, but it has been working with Facebook for months to ensure the app follows the site’s privacy rules.  Facial Profiler users will be able to send friend requests to their lookalikes, but Coke admits it doesn’t quite know how members will use it.  “Alex Burnard, a creative director for the ad firm that worked with Coca-Cola on this project, has watched members’ reactions when they find their matches, saying that it introduces “a new social dynamic” that people haven’t encountered before.

The software is based on the same kind of technology used by law-enforcement agencies to locate individuals within large pools of people.  Watching the ad on the Coke Zero website feels like watching a preview for a psychological thriller about doppelgangers, or a 20/20 special on identity theft.  It’s pretty intense.  As a big fan of Coca-Cola products and avid facebook-user, I’m not so sure about this one, but you just have to go to the website and see for yourself.

FaceBook Fan Check Virus Already Infected A Lot Of Users

Posted on 14 September 2009 by Michael

Just a few seconds ago I was praising FaceBook for its addictive games, but now we’re going to back it to blame it for its viruses. Yeah, you should know that FaceBook is full of viruses, malware and phishing scams among others, but you can protect yourselves. FaceBook Fan Check is apparently an app which checks your number of friends, then gives users the possibility to create a RSS feed to post it on your FaceBook page.

All is good until here as this is nothing more than a virus. When users try to access the FaceBook Fan Check app they’ll get a message that says the app is down because the developer is adding new features, and new capacity, and that it could take days to finish them. IT says that you should become a fan on FaceBook of the update, but in fact it will infect your FaceBook account, and it will send an email to all of your friends to become a fan, but it will infect them too.

Some say that the FaceBook Fan Check virus will change your password and email, but we’re not sure about that, and nobody reported that this FaceBook account was stolen. However, now that you know what is FaceBook Fan Check I advise you not to risk, at least until FaceBook releases an official statement regarding the Fan Check FaceBook virus.

It is said that it’s very hard to detect the FaceBook Fan Check virus therefore you should be careful. Be careful not to install any new security software hat will promise you to remove the FaceBook Fan Check virus because who knows what you’ll install. Be safe!

Another source has this to say about the so-called Fan Check Virus on Facebook.

We’ve received tips about a Facebook application called Fan Check; reports say this application is actually a virus, and should be avoided at all costs. We’ve dug a bit deeper, however, and it seems more likely that the rumor about Fan Check (even if the actual virus exists, which we’ve found no proof of) has been used to lead users to various malware and spyware ridden sites.

This alleged virus has only been described on a couple of blogs, such as this one, but we’ve found no reports about it on sites of security firms such as McAfee or Symantec.

The virus supposedly acts in the following way: if you try to access a Facebook application located at apps.facebook.com/fancheck/ (previously called StalkerCheck), you’ll get this message:

“FanCheck is adding new features and new capacity. This could take a few days.
Please become a fan, and we’ll send you an update when we’re back online”

According to sources, merely becoming a fan will “infect” your Facebook account, which is highly unlikely. All other reports about the virus seem to be created by spammers themselves. Google lists the phrase “facebook fan check virus” as a popular trend, but there lies the problem; if you actually try to search for this phrase, you’ll be bombarded by sites containing malware.

We believe that this is merely a two part hoax: on one hand, you have a defunct application that allegedly lets you see who’s been visiting your Facebook profile – which cannot work due to Facebook’s policies, and all applications claiming to do so are scams. On the other, spammers and malicious hackers are feeding the rumors around this application to lead people to search for a solution, and getting their computers infected by malware in return.

In any case, this is what you should do: stay away from Fan Check application – or any other Facebook application that hints at being able to tell you who’s been visiting your profile. Furthermore, don’t search for the “Fan Check Facebook virus,” as it is most likely a hoax.
