Hours After Chile Quake, Tsunami Hits Hawaii

Posted on 27 February 2010 by Michael

Tsunami waves have washed ashore in Hawaii, hours after a massive earthquake struck Chile overnight.

The impact from the waves doesn’t appear to be severe, as the flow of water looked more like a tidal fluctuation.

The waves arrived around noon local time, not long after water levels began dropping around the islands. The drop in water levels exposed reefs in some spots and sent streaks of muddy water into deeper areas.

Later, some water flowed over Coconut Island, which is a small park located offshore from the area of Hilo.

Much of the Pacific Rim remains under a tsunami warning after the 8.8-magnitude quake hit Chile early Saturday.

Coastal areas of British Columbia were also placed under an advisory.

The warning, issued by the West Coast Alaska Tsunami Warning Center, said there is the possibility of strong localized currents. While massive waves are not expected, low-lying areas and beaches are at risk in B.C.

The advisory also includes parts of coastal Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California.

The tsunami warning issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center includes parts of Central and South America, New Zealand, Russia, Japan, the Philippines, Hawaii and a number of Pacific islands.

Earlier in the day in Hawaii, sirens wailed as a warning for residents to leave low lying areas. Roads have also been cleared in the tourist-heavy Waikiki area.

According to the tsunami bulletin, all shores of each island are under threat, no matter which direction they face.

“A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii,” the bulletin reads. “Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property.”

Hilo International Airport, located near the coast, was also closed.

“These are dangerous, dangerous events,” said John Cummings, spokesman for the Honolulu Emergency Management Department.

Meanwhile, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said Saturday that a huge wave has already hit the Robinson Crusoe Islands, which are about 660 kilometres off the Chilean coast. Three people are missing after a huge wave covered half of the village of San Juan Batista, said Ivan de la Maza, the superintendent of Chile’s principal mainland port.

Waves 1.8 metres higher than normal hit the Chilean coast near Concepcion, the country’s second-largest city, shortly after the quake.

Sirens and bells rang out on several Pacific Rim islands Saturday as officials took advantage of a significant lead time to alert residents of the coming waves.

Tsunami waves as high as two metres hit parts of French Polynesia early Saturday, but officials said no damage was immediately reported.

Police and officials in the Pacific Island of Tonga have started to evacuate the towns in low-lying coastal areas. The exodus of residents from the coastal areas was accompanied by a warning from officials that waves as high as one metre could wash ashore within three hours.

National Disaster Office deputy director Mali’u Takai told The Associated Press church bells were ringing to alert residents. Tonga officials plan to move up to 50,000 people from the coast to the interior.

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa told the Ecuavisa television channel that a tsunami has already passed the Galapagos Islands. It caused a swell, but no damage, he said.

Elsewhere in the Pacific Rim, disaster management officials in Fiji said they’ve been warned to expect waves as high as 2.3 metres to strike the archipelago’s northern and eastern islands.

Advance warning gives region time to prepare

Charles McCreery, director of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, said the lead time before the tsunami comes ashore has given officials much-needed preparation time.

“We have a reasonable lead time,” he told the Associated Press. “We should be able to alert everyone in harm’s way to move out of the evacuation zones.”

In Japan, broadcaster NHK quoted experts who predicted a tsunami could hit Japan in less than 24 hours, but it isn’t expected to be large. In 2001, a tsunami that hit Japan after an 8.4-magnitude earthquake near Chile measured 28 centimetres.

However, seismologist Fumihiko Imamura of Japan’s Tohoku University warned Japanese citizens that a tsunami could still be powerful and destructive even if generated by a quake thousands of kilometres away.

“There is the possibility that it could reach Japan without losing its strength,” Imamura said.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency has yet to issue a formal warning.

In Australia, local officials have put several regions under a tsunami watch.

The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for a “potential tsunami threat” to New South Wales state, Queensland state, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island. A tsunami would not hit the region until early Sunday morning local time, the Center said.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Institute of Vulcanology and Seismology issued a low-level alert Saturday that residents should watch for potential tsunami warnings. The agency did not immediately recommend evacuations.

After a 9.5-magnitude quake struck the country in 1960, a tsunami killed 140 people in Japan, 61 in Hawaii and 32 in the Philippines. According to Japan’s Meteorological Agency, that tsunami measured between one and four metres in height.

I realize this topic doesn’t really fit in with my blog topics but it is here are part of an experiment of mine.  I am trying to write about popular topics on the web right now and see if I can get traffic from Google.  If I can get a bunch of traffic from Google then I can possibly make some money of those people coming to my website and click on my advertisements.  It has proven to work in the past so I am testing this theory again now.  Hopefully it works.

However on a more serious note.  This news it very sad.  I wish we didn’t have this type of natural disasters in the world.  So many people are left homeless and without food.  It’s a sad time for everyone. Hopefully they will get a lot of support from the rest of the world.  I will be wishing the best for everyone in Hawaii and Chile.  Hopefully this won’t happen again and people in Chile and Hawaii are able to recover from this disaster.

200th Post On MindOfMichael dot Com

Posted on 03 September 2009 by Michael

Start the parade! This is my 200th post on my blog.  It has only taken me 1 year to get to the 200 post mark.  I was hoping in the past year to post a lot more than I actually did but at least I did my best.  It was my first month with a blog and I am glad I’ve sticken with it.  There has been months where I slacked a lot on posting but I always come back to it and give it my best effort to post.  As a part-time blogger it is difficult to do everything in life and still have time to blog.  So CHEERS to all those who are part-time bloggers and make the time to keep updating their blogs.  I congrat you people and know first hand how difficult it can be.

200th-post

So hopefully in the future I will continue to have the same success I’ve had in the past and will grow upon it.  I’ve surpassed my expectation in my first year for earnings and have learnt a ton of things about blogging.  My biggest piece of advice to any new bloggers it to just keep at it no matter how difficult it seems.  When you see you aren’t making any money then that means you need to do some research and learn ways to make money. I am constantly researching and learning new things.  I also do a lot of experimenting on my blog to see what works best for earning money.  So never give up and keep at it.  Have the determination and drive needed to succeed and you will.  If you believe you can do it you can.  You do not need to be the smartest person in the world to make a blog or earn a decent living blogging.  So start blogging part time and keep at it.  You will be amazed at what you can achieve if you keep at it.  I am proof that earning online is possible.  I’ve already gotten multiple checks from Google Adsense and am now branchning out into making money in different ways.

Good luck to all and make the Internet a better place with your unique and interesting content.

Telemark Skiing – Skiing Using The Telemark Turn

Posted on 25 August 2009 by Michael

Telemark skiing is a term used for skiing using the Telemark turn. It is also known as “free heel skiing.” Unlike alpine skiing equipment, the skis used for telemarking have a binding that only connects the boot to the ski at the toes, just as in cross-country skiing. Telemark turns are led with the heel flat on the outside ski (the downhill ski at the end of the turn), while the inside (uphill) ski is pulled beneath the skier’s body with a flexed knee and raised heel. The skis are staggered but not quite parallel, and 50% to 60% of the body weight is distributed on the outside ski, depending on snow conditions.

The Telemark turn came to the attention of the Norwegian public in 1868, when Sondre Norheim took part in a ski jumping competition. Norheim’s technique of fluid turns soon dominated skiing, and in Norway it continued to do well into the next century. Starting in the 1910s, newer techniques based on the stem gradually replaced Telemark in the Alpine countries. Newer techniques were easier to master and enabled shorter turns better suited for steeper alpine terrain and skiing downhill. The Telemark turn became the technique of ski touring in rolling terrain.

The technique is named after the Telemark region of Norway, just as the Stem Christie turn was named after Christiania (now Oslo), Norway. As well as inventing the Telemark turn, Sondre Norheim and his fellow skiers used and refined parallel skiing techniques. Thus, while the Telemark is part of early skiing’s foundation, parallel techniques are of equal importance.

The Telemark revival

The revival in the Telemark technique, after its decline from popularity in the mid-1940s, started in United States in the 1970s. Telemark skiing was a back-to-basics reaction to the high-tech equipment developments of alpine skiing, and the increasing reliance on crowded groomed pistes served by ever larger and faster mechanical ski lifts. The use of traditional clothing is associated with the Telemark skiing revival.

The Telemark revival started almost simultaneously in Crested Butte, Colorado and the northern part of the Green Mountains in Vermont, but spread most quickly to other areas in the Western United States. It came to the attention of a larger public with a demonstration by a team from the Professional Ski Instructors of America at Interski, Italy in 1983. It grew to prominence during the 1990s; and although organizations such as NATO (North American Telemark Organization) and NET (New England Telemark) sponsor telemark festivals and Instruction as the sport continues to grow, it is still considered a minority sport.

Equipment

Skis

Most modern telemark skis are virtually identical to today’s alpine skis. Developments in shape and manufacture have seen skis get shorter and wider, taking design cues from both alpine skiing and snowboarding. The unique mechanics of the telemark turn could distinguish telemark equipment from alpine equipment, but advances in boot and binding technology have helped reduce the need to have the ski itself meet any such demands. Many manufacturers still have lines of telemark-specific skis, which are, in general, lighter and softer than comparable alpine skis. Telemark-specific skis may also entail a different shape. The ScottyBob range of skis feature asymmetrically curved sides, where the outside edge places the centre of the curve beneath the skiers toe (where the weight is placed on the trailing ski in the telemark turn) while the inside edge remains at the conventional boot-centre point.

Boots

Leather boots are still used by some, but durable polymer (“Pebax”) is now the usual choice. Polymer boots feature a bellows above the toes to allow the necessary flex for a telemark turn. All standard telemark boots have a trapezoidal “duckbill” at the front, which interfaces boots with the binding. While most telemark skiers use cables to attach boots to bindings, the duckbill has three reinforced holes in the bottom to attach three-pin bindings. NTN boots are also becoming more popular, which instead of the duckbill attach to the binding by a hook in the front and ball of the boot.

Bindings

Bindings hold the Telemark boot to the ski by the toe only. The oldest version of manufactured bindings, so called three-pin bindings, had three pins pointing up from the ski for which boots had matching holes. The duckbill was placed on top of the pins and held down with a locking mechanism (the “bail”). This duckbill boot-binding interface is referred to as the 75mm Nordic Norm.

From the 1980s onwards, telemark equipment has become progressively heavier and more durable as manufacturers seek to answer the demand for telemark equipment offering greater performance and durability.

During the 1980s cable bindings that have a spring-loaded cable to hold the boot in the binding became popular. These have a socket that the duckbill fits into, but usually no pins. The spring-loaded cable is stretched onto the boot heel by a throw. Cable bindings are stronger than three-pin bindings and offer more control in turns, but they are heavier and produce more resistance to flexing the boot, therefore are not as suitable for ski touring.

To address ski touring issues, since 2005, cable binding manufacturers have introduced touring-mode bindings. These switch between a “free pivot” mode (borrowed from randonnee binding design) for touring and a downhill mode with more cable tension applied to the boot.

Also available are hinged plate bindings, combining the lateral stiffness of a traditional alpine binding with the flexibility of a traditional Telemark binding. Despite performance benefits, these bindings have failed to gain a significant following during the late 1990s and early 2000s, and most manufacturers have withdrawn models from production. Examples include the Voile VPII, Bomber Bishop (both USA) and Linken (Norway).

Since the 1990s Telemark news media have referred to the concept of a telemark binding “holy grail”. This is a vision of a telemark binding design that offers the ability to perform telemark turns combined with touring-mode, step-in entry and safety-release features.

An international consortium of Fritschi and Black Diamond produced the first binding to address this ambition with the hinged plate “Skyhoy” binding. Production ceased when equipment from the first production run displayed faults that were uneconomic to rectify.

The 7tm binding, manufactured by German company Rezotec GMBH, is a commercially successful design that offers “holy grail” features.

In late 2007 Rottefella introduced the New Telemark Norm (NTN) binding, a departure from the 75mm Nordic Norm, which uses a different boot sole, co-developed with the Crispi and Scarpa boot companies. Current NTN systems are at the heavier end of the boot/binding spectrum, primarily aimed at maximizing downhill control. However, the touring-mode feature is considered by many users to off-set the additional weight penalty.

Black Diamond Equipment were developing a competing “holy grail” system. They had announced that this would debut in 2009 and would maintain compatibility with the 75mm Nordic Norm. However, in late 2008 statements from Black Diamond personnel indicated that the development had been put on hold indefinitely [1]

Skins

For those taking to the wilderness, climbing “skins” (in recent times, synthetic or mohair rather than the traditional sealskin) are used on the bottom of the ski to climb uphill. “Harscheisen” (ski crampons — also called “couteau” or “cortelli”) are sometimes used to assist when skinning on hard, icy surfaces.

Technique

The edges used in a Telemark turn are the same as with a parallel turn, but a Telemark turn involves leading the turn with the outside ski while trailing the inside ski. When initiating a turn, the skier edges the outside ski (which becomes the downhill ski at the completion of the turn) with a flat heel while simultaneously lifting the heel on the inside ski to shift the ski to the back of the Telemark stance. Through the turn, the skier’s weight is shifted onto the outside ski by a ratio of 50/50 up to 80/20 depending on snow conditions, and rests primarily on the toe-half of each foot—even the outside foot, which has its boot heel in contact with the ski. Inexperienced Telemark skiers often find it difficult to place enough weight on their trailing, inside (“heel-up”) ski to force it to turn, or “carve” in unison with the outside ski. When skiing off-piste in light powder the weight ratio can be different than the suggested 50 to 80 % on the outside ski. Developments in modern telemark technique subsequent to the release of modern, highly responsive boots and bindings have demonstrated an increasing preference toward a turn made in an aggressive, carving fashion that closely resembles the modern alpine turn; as such, the modern technique emphasizes a side-to-side weight distribution that closely resembles that of alpine skiing. Often having the majority of the weight on the inside trailing ski can help compensate for poor technique, as it allows the skier to use the outside ski as a ‘buffer’ to control the snow, and to help keeping the outside ski tip above the snow.

While there is universal agreement that a Telemark turn must involve staggered skis, there is no agreement on how much the skis should be staggered. Increasing the stagger (the fore/aft separation of the skis and boots) increases the amount that both knees are bent and brings the skier’s torso closer to the snow. Some Telemarkers enjoy an extremely low stance with the trailing knee almost in contact with the ski top, while others prefer a taller stance, with a consequently smaller stagger, that allows quicker transitions between turns. As a general rule, the back leg should be tucked in, with the knee of the trailing leg aligned vertically over the leading foot. Telemarkers who turn with their trailing knee considerably behind their leading foot are often referred to as “dog-leggers” because their rear leg resembles that of a wounded dog. “Toe-dragger” can also be used to describe Telemark skiers who do not tuck in their rear leg. It is possible to make parallel turns on Telemark equipment, which is why penalties are assessed if the boots are not staggered by at least a boot’s length in FIS Telemark competitions. This element of technique is up to the skier, although a very low stance is to be avoided where hard uneven snow might cause the lowered knee to collide with the ground or ski. Some Telemark skiers, therefore, use kneepads to reduce the risk of injury.

Accomplished Telemark skiers, like accomplished alpine skiers, keep their torsos vertical and oriented downhill while linking turns, thus avoiding turning too far. This position also allows greater control over the fine-tuning of weight distribution. Also, when skiing in thick powder it is important not to lean back. Staying forward and facing downhill allows you to respond to changing conditions quicker than if you are in the back seat. The lack of a fixed heel means that it is quite easy to go headfirst into the snow if one hits a hard patch, but if you are centered on your skis and facing downhill, you are actually less likely to fall on your face. Poles are optional. With or without, the skier’s hands should be in front of the body.

Some Telemark skiers continue to ski with a single long pole or “lurk” held in both hands in traditional style. The lurk should only contact the snow on the inside of the turn, though some find better balance results if the lurk contacts the snow on the outside of the turn.

In case you were wondering why I posted about Telemark Skiing on a website about making money online and blogging I will give you a quick summary here.  Basically what I have been doing for the last while is do research on hot topics using Google Trends. Once I find a hot topic that people are searching for I write about it as quickly as possible and try to get my blog post indexed as fast as possible by Google.  If it gets indexed quickly and ranked decently in the search engines I start to get a piece of the traffic.  People keep searching for that topic in that certain time frame and I get plenty of hits to my website.  We all know that traffic = money so therefore I am cashing in by all this extra traffic.

It is a technique that doesn’t always work but some of the time when you select the right topic you can get a ton of traffic and make a lot of money off of that traffic.  So try it yourself and see how it works out.  If you can find a hot topic that doesn’t have a lot of information about it and you write about it first you will see a lot more traffic come into your website that will convert into money in your pocket.  So if you can try and stick to low competition topics that relate to your website.  If that doesn’t work try and branch out like I’ve done to unrelated topics and see what kind of success you get.  You will be surprised at how well it works when you find the right topic.

Good luck!

Could Moon Landings Have Been Faked? Some Still Think So

Posted on 17 July 2009 by Michael

(CNN) — It captivated millions of people around the world for eight days in the summer of 1969. It brought glory to the embattled U.S. space program and inspired beliefs that anything was possible.

It’s arguably the greatest technological feat of the 20th century.

And to some, it was all a lie.

Forty years after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the moon, a small cult of conspiracy theorists maintains the historic event — and the five subsequent Apollo moon landings — were staged. These people believe NASA fabricated the landings to trump their Soviet rivals and fulfill President Kennedy’s goal of ferrying humans safely to and from the moon by the end of the 1960s.

“I do know the moon landings were faked,” said crusading filmmaker Bart Sibrel, whose aggressive interview tactics once provoked Aldrin to punch him in the face. “I’d bet my life on it.”

Sibrel may seem crazy, but he has company. A 1999 Gallup poll found that a scant 6 percent of Americans doubted the Apollo 11 moon landing happened, and there is anecdotal evidence that the ranks of such conspiracy theorists, fueled by innuendo-filled documentaries and the Internet, are growing.

Twenty-five percent of respondents to a survey in the British magazine Engineering & Technology said they do not believe humans landed on the moon. A handful of Web sites and blogs circulate suspicions about NASA’s “hoax.”

And a Google search this week for “Apollo moon landing hoax” yielded more than 1.5 billion results.

“We love conspiracies,” said Roger Launius, a senior curator at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington. “Going to the moon is hard to understand. And it’s easier for some people to accept the answer that, ‘Well, maybe we didn’t go to the moon.’ A lot of it is naivete.”

Conspiracy theories about the Apollo missions began not long after the last astronaut returned from the moon in 1972. Bill Kaysing, a technical writer for Rocketdyne, which built rocket engines for NASA’s Apollo program, published a 1974 book, “We Never Went to the Moon: America’s Thirty Billion Dollar Swindle.”

In the book and elsewhere, Kaysing argued that NASA lacked the technology in 1969 to land humans safely on the moon, that the Apollo astronauts would have been poisoned by passing through the Van Allen radiation belts that ring the Earth and that NASA’s photos from the moon contained suspicious anomalies. Video See improved NASA footage of the 1969 moonwalk »

Kaysing theorized NASA sent the Apollo 11 astronauts up in a rocket until it was out of sight, then transferred the lunar capsule and its three passengers to a military cargo plane that dropped the capsule eight days later in the Pacific, where it was recovered. In the meantime, he believed, NASA officials filmed the “moon landing” at Area 51, the high-security military base in the Nevada desert, and brainwashed the astronauts to ensure their cooperation.

Some believe Kaysing’s theories inspired the 1978 movie “Capricorn One,” in which NASA fakes a Mars landing on a remote military base, then goes to desperate lengths to cover it up. Others insist NASA recruited director Stanley Kubrick, hot off “2001: A Space Odyssey,” to film the “faked” moon landings.

Oh, and those moon rocks? Lunar meteorites from Antarctica.

Decades later, Kaysing’s beliefs formed the foundation for “Conspiracy Theory: Did We Land on the Moon?” a sensational 2001 Fox TV documentary that spotted eerie “inconsistencies” in NASA’s Apollo images and TV footage.

Among them: no blast craters are visible under the landing modules; shadows intersect instead of running parallel, suggesting the presence of an unnatural light source; and a planted American flag appears to ripple in a breeze although there’s no wind on the moon.

The hour-long special sparked such interest in the topic that NASA took the unusual step of issuing a news release and posting a point-by-point rebuttal on its Web site. The press release began: “Yes. Astronauts did land on the moon.”

In various documents, NASA has countered that the Apollo astronauts passed through the Van Allen belts too quickly to be exposed to dangerous levels of radiation; that the module’s descent engines weren’t powerful enough to leave a blast crater; that the shadows in photos were distorted by wide-angle lenses and sloping lunar terrain; and that the Apollo flags had horizontal support bars that made the flags swing.

Kaysing died in 2005, but not before grabbing the attention of Sibrel, a Nashville, Tennessee, filmmaker who has since become the most visible proponent of the Apollo hoax theories. With funding from an anonymous donor, Sibrel wrote and directed a 47-minute documentary in 2001 that reiterated many of the now-familiar hoax arguments.

Critics of moon-landing hoax theorists, and there are many, say it would be impossible for tens of thousands of NASA employees and Apollo contractors to keep such a whopping secret for almost four decades.

But Sibrel believes the Apollo program was so compartmentalized that only its astronauts and a handful of high-level NASA officials knew the entire story. Sibrel spent years ambushing Apollo astronauts and insisting they swear on a Bible before his cameras that they walked on the moon.

“When someone has gotten away with a crime, in my opinion, they deserve to be ambushed,” Sibrel said. “I’m a journalist trying to get at the truth.”

In an episode made infamous on YouTube, Sibrel confronted Aldrin in 2002 and called him “a coward, a liar and a thief.” Aldrin, then 72, socked the thirtysomething Sibrel in the face, knocking him backwards.

“I don’t want to call attention to the individuals who are trying to promote and shuffle off this hoax on people,” Aldrin told CNN in a recent interview. “I feel sorry for the gullible people who’re going to go along with them. I guess it’s just natural human reaction to want to be a part of ‘knowing something that somebody doesn’t know.’ But it’s misguided. It’s just a shame.”

It’s been 37 years since the last Apollo moon mission, and tens of millions of younger Americans have no memories of watching the moon landings live. A 2005-2006 poll by Mary Lynne Dittmar, a space consultant based in Houston, Texas, found that more than a quarter of Americans 18 to 25 expressed some doubt that humans set foot on the moon.

“As the number of people who were not yet born at the time of the Apollo program increases, the number of questions [about the moon landings] also may increase,” NASA said in a statement. “Conspiracy theories are always difficult to refute because of the impossibility of proving a negative.”

Launius, the National Air and Space Museum curator, believes Apollo conspiracy theories resonate with people who are disengaged from society and distrustful of government. He also believes their numbers are overblown.

“These diehards are really vocal, but they’re really tiny,” he said.

But Stuart Robbins, a Ph.D. candidate in astrophysics at the University of Colorado who gives lectures defending NASA from Apollo hoax theorists, believes their influence can be harmful.

“If people don’t think we were able to go to the moon, then they don’t believe in the ingenuity of human achievement,” he said. “Going to the moon and returning astronauts safely back to Earth is arguably one of the most profound achievements in human history, and so when people simply believe it was a hoax, they lose out on that shared experience and doubt what humans can do.”

In its information campaign against Apollo’s “debunkers,” NASA may have a potent ace up its sleeve, however. Its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is now circling the moon with powerful cameras, snapping crisp pictures that could reveal Apollo 11’s Eagle lander squatting on the moon’s surface.

Then again, conspiracy theorists may just say NASA doctored the photos.

“Will the LRO’s incredibly high-resolution images of the lunar surface, including, eventually, the Apollo landing sites, finally quell the lunacy of the Moon Hoax believers? Obviously it won’t,” writes astronomer Phil Plait in his blog on Discover magazine’s Web site. “These true believers don’t live in an evidence-based world.”

Pet Airways: Where The Fur Flies

Posted on 10 July 2009 by Michael

Pet Airways: Where the Fur Flies
Pet-Oriented Airline Will Take Dogs and Cats Airborne, Starting at $149
By MATT HOSFORD, ANDY MILLER and LEE FERRAN

July 9, 2009 —

There’s a new airline that has no security lines, no middle seats and flight attendants who even take customers for a walk before they fly. The only catch? You’ve got to be a dog or a cat — no humans allowed.

Pet Airlines will get the fur flying next week when it begins service as the country’s first pet-only airline.

The airline’s launch is the culmination of an idea from pet owner Alissa Binder and her husband, Dan Wiesel, after they took their aging Jack Russell, Jack, on a cross-country flight. Like other pets, Jack had to fly in the cargo bay.

“We were totally stressed out,” Wiesel said. “We didn’t know if she was on the flight, didn’t know how she was doing.”

To avoid that stress in the future, the couple leased a plane, hired veterinary technicians to monitor the animals in flight and started advertising their new airline. Starting at $149, pet owners can send their furry friends on flights that provide a preboarding walk and bathroom break.

Pet Airways will initially fetch animals from five cities — New York, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles.

The planes have no seats and no overhead compartments, and are all designed for creature comfort.

“Our priority is the pets,” Binder said. “It’s about the pets.”

While Pet Airways may be the newest dog on the block, they face competition with major carriers such as Continental, which moves an average of 500 pets every day.

“We’ve got dedicated personnel, constant monitoring 24 hours a day, tracking all animals,” Continental employee Lisa Schoppa said.

Furry Frequent-Flier Miles

Even famous dogs take to the cargo bay when they fly.

Westminster Dog Show champion spaniel Stump has racked up half a million Continental frequent flier miles so far.

Pet Airways plans to offer a similar program. But for now it’ll be busy enough. The airline is booked solid for the next two months as pet owners like Amanda Hickey latch on to the idea of fine flying for her pets.

“I would be a wreck if I had to wait in baggage claim for them to come out at the end,” Hickey said.

Just so people know what I have done above is I’ve done a search on Google Trends for popular searches and I have written about them even though they doesn’t exactly relate to the content on my blog.  The idea behind this is that if my site gets indexed by Google in a good position on the key terms above in bold then I will get a lot of traffic because people are searching for that term.  If I get a lot of traffic I have the potential to make money off of my ads.  Therefore by writing about the above content I am creating income online.  So this right now is a test to see how well my blog post works.  If it is a success I have found a great new way to make money online through search engines and if not I have only wasted a few minutes of my time making this post in the first place.  I will let you guys know how it goes.

Thanks for reading my posts and let me know if any of you have tried this technique before and if it has worked for you.

Jackson Autopsy Under Way; Results Due Yesterday

Posted on 27 June 2009 by Michael

UPDATE: After meeting privately with Jackson’s family, the coroner’s office is tentatively scheduled to announce its findings to the media at 3 p.m. PT. We will be streaming live from the press conference outside the family’s Encino, Calif., home.
______________________________

The autopsy on Michael Jackson has begun, but whether or not they find something conclusive to determine the cause of death is anybody’s guess.

At a press conference, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office spokesman confirmed the department’s chief medical examiner Lakshmanan Sathyavagiswaran will conduct the examination along with an assistant pathologist and results should be expected within the next few hours “depending on what the doctors need to do and how fast they work.” Once done, the King of Pop’s body will be released to his family.

The spokesman also said he had no knowledge that Jackson was administered a Demerol injection around 11:30 a.m. yesterday, shortly before going into cardiac arrest, as several media outlets are now reporting.

Toxicology tests can usually take up to six weeks. But the coroner’s office said it will “definitely be expedited” and the findings will still take a week and up to three weeks.

I have written about Michael Jackson above on my make money online website because I thought Michael Jackson had some great music and I wanted to share some of his info.  I also know that writing about Michael Jackson will get a lot more traffic to my website.  I am sorry if that is cynical but the truth of the matter is that gossip sales and drives traffic.  Traffic is important for websites and blogs like mine so I am doing a test and writing about gossip to see what it will do to the traffic on my website.  So we will see what happens when writing about celebrities and I will update people on my results of what has happen with my traffic after this post has been up for a few days.
